Purchased with Endowment Funds CHUPICUARO FEMALE his figure from Chupicuaro is fired with glossy red and cream slip and features distinctive geometric patterns. The patterns suggest that people painted or tatooed their bodies, dyed their hair red, and wore turbans to hold their hair in place. The teeth have clearly been filed. This figure was probably intended to symbolize fertility and may represent an ideal of feminine grace and beauty as well as being associated with the fertility of the land. |
